Implementing
and Socializing Positive Values of Bridge Game
through National Inter University Bridge Champhionship
and Electro Cup Bridge Tournament |
The game of bridge is the most exciting game in the world.
It's easy to learn but takes a while to play well; it's lots
of fun and a great challenge! Unlike other games and sports,
each bridge hand takes about 5 to 10 minutes to play from
beginning to end. The action, the pressure, the strategies
and emotions, the instantaneous sense of achievement (or defeat)
is a wonderful "high". And anyone may compete. Old,
young, rich, poor, man, woman, healthy or disabled - all compete
against one another at an equal level. "You're never
too old to learn," said 90-year-old Boris Schapiro, a
champion from England.
Young people will learn the value of ethics, good behavior
and poise. Bridge game strongly related with business philosophy,
banking, scientist, and also an educated game. Because of
the nature of the game and its simple requirement, the game
only needs four people and one deck of card to play, playing
bridge is one of favorite extra curricular activity in many
universities. In University of Indonesia, bridge is not just
a game to simply have fun with. It’s even more than
an extra curricular activity. There has been annual bridge
tournament arranged by Department of Electrical University
of Indonesia that has been acknowledged by Indonesian Contract
Bridge Association (Gabungan Bridge Seluruh Indonesia - GABSI).
The tournament initiated at 1978, open for all universities
in Indonesia and also non student bridge players. This tournament
is known as Turnamen Bridge Elektro
Cup (Electro Cup Bridge Tournament). One of the objective
of this tournament is to accommodate the new talented bridge
players in University of Indonesia, especially from Electrical
Engineering, so they can improve their skills in a real bridge
game environment.
Many bridge players from University of Indonesia accomplished
national and even world level bridge achievements. From all
five National Inter University Bridge Championships since
1993, University of Indonesia team achieved 4
silver medals and 1 gold medals in team event. In international
level, University of Indonesia team was representing Indonesia
for 1st Inter University World Bridge
Championship in Maastricht-Netherland, August 2000.
University of Indonesia team ranked 10th in that event, best
amongst Asian teams.
With all achievements and tradition that University of Indonesia
already have, we believe that in this year National Inter
University Bridge Champhionship in Batam, it should be a modest
target to take the champhionship trophy again to University
of Indonesia and The Tournament Bridge Electro’s Cup
as one of the event to step forward to the future.
- An event to increase the popularity of Bridge sport in
Indonesia, especially in the environment of Campus.
- Continuing University of Indonesia bridge tradition as
a champion team in national level bridge events.

Inter University Bridge Championship in Batam.

The professional national bridge athlete’s championship
Bridge is one of the sports that use the mind’s skills.
It is the game of strategy which almost everybody can play.
Usually, the range of the bridge player’s age is from
teenager to old people. They could be men or women. In this
game, there are many values that the players could gain, for
example, the partnership. As a partner, you must have faith
to your partner. You also must cooperate each other to gain
victory. In this case, the values are good cooperation, trust,
communication, and intellectuality. So, bridge game has a
wide, universal aspects that many people have.
In the Bridge environment, the things that usually the players
needs are drinks and snacks. Because they playing in a closed
room for nearly 6 hours, depends on how many boards they played.
So, sometime they need something to relax their mind and body
for a while such as snacks, drinks, or even cigarettes.
