WOODGROVES MULTI

The Woodgroves Multi convention begins with the opener bidding 2 Diamonds. The holding of the opener can vary according to the partnership understanding and will be clarified during the ensuing auction. The employment of the Woodgroves Multi is to some degree questionable and should be cleared with the governing bridge organization. The convention is illustrated as below:

2		3-10HCPs and no side suit in either Major suit, or
		25-27HCPs, balanced distribution, 8.5 tricks minimum, or
		6+ Club suit with no side suit. Game-forcing, or
		6+ Diamond suit with no side suit. Game-forcing

The responses to a 2 Diamond opening are as follows. The concept is to first of all have the opener clarify his holding.

Pass		The responder is weak, Diamonds shortage and a short suit in a Major suit
2		Not game-forcing if opening is weak Two in Hearts
2		Invitational if opening is weak Two in Hearts
2 NT		This is Lebensohl. Requests opener to play Minor suit at Three Level or
		promises a 6-card Major suit and is invitational. Requests opener to rebid 3 Clubs
3		An artificial forcing bid requesting additional information from the opener
3		A preempt in the weak Two bid suit of the opener
3		Natural and game-forcing
3		Natural and game-forcing
3 NT		To play
4		A preempt in the Minor suit showing at least a 5-5 distribution
4		A preempt in the weak Two bid suit of the opener
4		To play if opening is a weak Two bid
4		To play if opening is a weak Two bid

Rebids by the opener after an opening of 2 Diamonds and responses of 2 Hearts or 2 Spades:

Pass		Weak Two in Hearts
2		Weak Two in Spades. This rebid occurs only in the sequence: 2 - 2
2 NT		Shows 25-27 high card points
3		Promises a long Club suit and is game-forcing
3		Promises a long Diamond suit and is game-forcing
3		Shows a minimum weak Two in Hearts. Only in the sequence: 2 - 2
4		Shows a maximum weak Two in Hearts. Only in the sequence: 2 - 2

Rebids by the opener after an opening of 2 Diamonds and a response of 2 No Trump:

3		Forcing for one round if weak Two
3		Game-forcing
3		Shows a long Club suit and is game-forcing
3 NT		Promises 25-27 high card points. Natural and forcing

Rebids by the responder after the following bidding sequence: 2 - 2 No Trump - 3 :

Pass		Shows a long Club suit
3		To play
3		Invitational
3		Invitational
3 NT		Shows both Minor suits and is game-forcing

Rebids by the opener after a 3 Clubs response:

3		Shows a weak Two in Hearts. A 3 Hearts rebid by the responder is invitational
3		Shows a weak Two in Spades. A 3 Spades rebid by the responder is invitational

In the case that the opponents enter the bidding process, the defense mechanisms below outline the line of communication. If the opponent does not interfere with the continuation and natural understanding of the Woodgroves Multi, then the additional features remain the same as had no interference occurred.

Responses by the partner of the opener after an immediate overcall of 2 Hearts or 2 Spades are generally made as had no overcall taken place. The exception is the use of the double which requests that the opener pass with a weak Two in the overcalled suit.

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge.
