MARTY BERGEN

Mr. Marty A. Bergen, born 1948 of Farmingdale New York. He is a bridge teacher, writer and bridge professional since 1976. He graduated Albany State and State University at New Paltz. He is a former member of the National Appeals Committee. He has had a regular column in the Master Pointers section of the ACBL Bulletin since 1976 and Bridge Today since 1988.

Mr. Marty Bergen is well known for his development of new conventions and treatments, many of which are in common use. He also assisted with development of Law of Total Tricks, Support Doubles and 1 No Trump Semi-Forcing. His aggressive preemptive bidding style prompted the ABCL to pass the 5-5 rule in 1984. It was also owing to the agressive bidding style of Mr. Marty Bergen that the ACBL decided to enforce the 5-5 Rule, meaning that no Weak Two Bid should not be opened with less than 5 high card points and less than a 5-card suit. This 5-5 Rule has since been repealed.

He is a WBF World Master and a former member of the ACBL Appeals Committee and has contributed many articles on a regular basis to the ACBL Bridge Bulletin since 1976 and the Bridge Today magazine since 1988. Some, but not all of his victories and accomplishments are listed below. He also has more than sixty regional wins and victories.
