BERGEN OVER
ONE NO TRUMP
Mr. Marty Bergen, an excellent bridge player and bridge author, devised this method to interfere with and enter the bidding auction after his opponents opened a 1 No Trump. After many hands and experimentation, Mr. Marty Bergen decided that is was not very profitable to employ a Penalty Double, and therefore went looking for other ideas. He came up with the following idea, which some maintain is the same as Disturbing Opponent's No Trump or D.O.N.T.
After a 1 No Trump opening by the opponents:
Double A one suiter, generally not Spades Partner responds 2 Doubler then shows his suit 2 Diamonds and a Major suit 2 Shows both Major suits 2 A natural bid Since it is important to come to a partnership understanding, if you decide to employ this method, it is highly recommended that you incorporate it into your written partnership agreement.
No examples are given, since the method is almost self-explanatory. The High Card Points required and the distribution needed are very similar to Brozel. Remember that your distribution will be your best friend once you decide to inform your partner. Remember also, that the opponents can use the Penalty Double and can sometimes achieve more points in this manner for their side. The issue of vulnerability also plays an important part.
If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
